MP calls for threat of fines over stench

AN MP has urged East Riding Council to consider financial penalties against Yorkshire Water if it fails to control odours at its fire-damaged sewage plant near Hedon.

Firefighters spent an hour tackling a blaze at the waste water treatment plant at Saltend last month, which destroyed an odour control unit.

The company has diverted odours from the damaged unit into a new £3.5m one installed in December 2011, and has also deployed two mobile odour control units.

Graham Stuart, Conservative MP for Beverley and Holderness, said: “I have spoken to the chief executive of Yorkshire Water about the problem and told him that we do not want excuses but that they should do whatever it takes to protect people from the stink. I am also pressing East Riding of Yorkshire Council to consider financial penalties on Yorkshire Water if they do not satisfactorily reinstate effective odour control at the site.”
