MPs are urged to join celebrations of 39th Yorkshire Day in Commons motion

Communities, councils and organisations across the region are all doing their bit to ensure Yorkshire Day is every bit as grand as the Grand Départ.

South Kirkby, near Pontefract, is set to host the main event, which sees civic dignitaries from across the region unite for a procession, organised by the Yorkshire Society.

Meanwhile, in York the Yorkshire Riding Society will conduct its own annual ceremony, reading the “Yorkshire Declaration” at various entrances in to the city from the three Ridings.

Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, has even asked for help to fly the flag of the white rose in the House of Commons.

He has put forward a parliamentary motion calling on colleagues “to celebrate all that God’s Own County has to offer” on the 39th annual Yorkshire Day.

The motion goes on to say that some of the biggest names in British history, the UK film and cultural scene, and the country’s finest sporting talents have come from Yorkshire.

The motion particularly picks out Yorkshire’s proud and successful sporting history across football, rugby league, cricket and cycling, culminating in the region playing host to the Tour de France.

“Thousands of us take great pride in calling Yorkshire ‘home’, and it’s not hard to see why,” said Mr Mulholland.

“The recent Grand Départ brought out the fantastic hospitality of people across Yorkshire.”
