Murderer on the run for three years is captured

Graham Dean, 63, was convicted of murder after a trial at Newport Crown Court, South Wales, in November 1981, and jailed for life.

He failed to return to Prescoed Prison in Monmouthshire on June 16, 2006.

The open jail allows inmates to make home leave visits of up to a week when their sentence is nearing its end.

Gwent Police made a fresh appeal to the public for information on Friday. Dean was arrested in Bristol by Avon and Somerset Police, the force said.

The arrest comes as another prisoner failed to return to the same open prison on Saturday.

Matthew Zammitt Davies, 31, was convicted of assault and theft at Swansea Crown Court in October 2006.

Gwent Police warned that Davies, who is not a registered sex offender, "may be a potential risk to the public".

He is described as white, 5ft 7in and of slight build. He has light brown hair and was last known to be wearing blue jeans, a black sweatshirt, white trainers, a black scarf and a black pair of gloves.

A statement said: "Gwent Police has activated its operational plan with the aim of locating the individual and the prison is co-operating fully with us.

"If they see him, members of the public are advised not to approach Matthew Zammitt Davies and to call police immediately on 01633 838111."

The force also appealed for information to find two patients who absconded together from a psychiatric hospital.

Nicholas Richmond, 21, and Paul Turner, 31, left Llanarth Court Hospital, near Abergavenny in Monmouthshire, at 2.15pm yesterday.

Both men are considered a potential risk to the public because they are no longer in controlled conditions, Gwent Police said.

The public are warned not to approach them, but notify police instead.

Richmond is described as white, 5ft 11in and of medium build. He has short dark brown hair, brown eyes and a pale complexion. He was last known to be wearing black jogging bottoms, a navy t-shirt and a black square-patterned green parka-style coat with fur around the hood.

Turner is described as white, 6ft and of large build. He has blue eyes, a pale complexion and short dark blond spiky hair.

He has a tattoo saying "Kyle" on his right arm, one of a Tasmanian devil on his upper arm and another of a person's name on his neck.
