Museum mourns Colonel the horse

Colonel, a shire horse at the National Coal Mining Museum for England, near Wakefield, has died at the age of 21.

The gentle giant’s life came to a peaceful end as old age finally caught up with him.

Colonel started his career at the museum in 1991 as a youngster. He used to give carriage rides to visitors but, with encroaching arthritis, retired from these duties in 2003.

The museum says donations can be made to its pit pony appeal in Colonel’s memory.
