Mystery manuscript

Jenny Alexander, assistant curator of fine art, with the last surviving original manuscript of the York Mystery Plays dating from the 15th century which is going on display in York Art Gallery.

The loan from the British Library will be the centrepiece of a new exhibition at the gallery ahead of the return of the Mystery Plays to the city this summer It will go on show from tomorrow until August 5. The exhibition, which continues until September 8, will also display artworks showing the original 12 stopping places of the wagons, from which the performances were staged.

Other medieval documents which will be on show include a 15th century inventory of the plays and a bond from 1453, both loaned from the Merchant Adventurers Hall in York.
