New beach huts to open door for more tourists

AN investment of £30,000 is to be ploughed into providing new beach huts for Whitby in an attempt to meet growing demand from holidaymakers who choose the British seaside.

Scarborough Council will invest in 30 new chalets for the seaside resort after deciding to keep providing the service despite putting the role out for tender.

It is hoped the move will boost council funds and eventually lead to more huts being built along the Yorkshire coast.

Scarborough Borough Council’s Cabinet member for tourism and culture, Coun David Jeffels, said: “We decided to do the work ourselves because it will enable us to have control over the chalets and it is seen as a potential financial benefit to the council as well.

“The beach huts have always been popular but they are now even so than ever before. By investing in the new chalets, we are not only satisfying the needs of families, but at the same time it is going to be bringing in some additional income. If the demand continues and we can find the resources I don’t see any reason why more shouldn’t be provided in Scarborough and Filey.”

Coun Jeffels said the new huts, which will include 12 luxury chalets, will add to the resort’s soaring popularity.

“What we are seeing as far as Whitby is concerned is that it is going from strength to strength as a holiday destination and it is fast becoming a year-round resort,” he said.

“There are more people spending their holidays at home and I think the Yorkshire coast could have its best year yet.”
