New home for fish as dam is restored

SPECIALIST engineers are preparing to restore a Sheffield dam after residents and businesses raised enough cash for the project to go ahead.

Charlton Brook Dam, at Chapeltown, is clogged with silt and debris, and Environment Agency officers have carried out surveys to check that the work will not damage wildlife.

It is hoped that by removing the silt, a healthy fishery can be

developed, and contractors AMCO are due to start draining the dam in the next few days.

Sheffield Council said there would be some disruption to traffic during the work, but the path through the site will remain open.

Large numbers of fish were removed from Charlton Brook by the Environment Agency in December 2007 and released into the Tinsley Canal after locals voiced concern about the amount of silt in the dam.

The agency said the fishery will be re-stocked with new fish once all project works are complete and after a "period of settling".

The scheme is being funded by cash from the Big Lottery fund, the Environment Agency and waster management firm Viridor. All funding has been secured by the Friends of Charlton Brook.
