New park set for deprived estate

A NEW park is set to be created on an area of scrubland on one of North Yorkshire’s most deprived estates.

The £140,000 project to create a naturalistic park on a large area of neglected rough grassland in the heart of the residential area of Barrowcliff, an estate of some 3,000 people, has been announced by the environmental body, Yorventure.

The project, which is a key part of a Barrowcliff regeneration strategy prepared in 2011, will include improved entrances and access, seating, new football area and event space, improved paths and lighting, natural play areas, habitat management and landscaping.

Doug Kidd, chairman of Barrowcliff Residents Association, said “We are all delighted with this fantastic news.

“Jonno’s Field is right at the heart of our community in Barrowcliff and has so much potential for improvement. The litter picks and consultation events we carried out showed huge local support for the project and I’m really looking forward to working with residents over the coming year to make the improvements happen and turn all these wonderful ideas into a reality.”
