NHS offers free course for unpaid carers

A free course to help carers in Kirklees is due to begin later this month.

NHS Kirklees and Kirklees Council have teamed up to invite unpaid carers to join the "looking after me" course.

The course is for anyone who looks after a family member, partner or neighbour in need of help because they are ill, frail or have a disability.

Parents of children with disabilities and those who care for people with drug or alcohol problems can also attend.

Marilyn Horton, user involvement manager at NHS Kirklees, said: "Looking after me is a course for adults who care for someone living with a long-term health condition or disability. The course is about carers making time to look after their own health needs. It aims to help them to take more control of their situation and make a difference to their life."

The organisers say: "The course provides a set of skills which have been shown to lead to many benefits for carers, helping them to learn new skills to help them to cope with their caring situation, develop the confidence to take more control of their lives and an opportunity to meet with others who share similar experiences. Participants will learn ideas and techniques about relaxation, healthy eating, dealing with depression and tiredness.

"Those taking part in the course will also receive useful information and facts; be able to discuss issues with others in a relaxed and confidential setting; discuss common problems and develop their communication skills and confidence," they add.
