NHS trials scheme to give residents say on spending

RESIDENTS in a deprived Yorkshire community are being invited to vote over how thousands of pounds of NHS money is spent.

A total of 10,000 will be up for grabs in Hull when 15 local groups, including schools, social clubs and community groups, will make pitches for a range of projects in the Orchard Park and Greenwood areas of the city.

They will then be able to vote on plans such as funding an allotment, dance sessions for children and families, and a boxing club.

Health chiefs describe the 'Your Voice, Your Choice' event as an "experiment" but it could become more widely used in future as NHS chiefs seek to find ways of giving people a greater voice in decisions.

Andrew Phair, north locality director for NHS Hull, said: "As well as giving the people of Orchard Park and Greenwood the opportunity to support their favourite projects, it also offers them a taste of decision-making in the NHS, where there are many worthy causes and it isn't always easy to decide how money will be spent.

"We know there are many individuals and groups in this part of the city who are looking to extend already successful projects or who want to try something new for the benefit of local residents.

"We are keen to support any project which promotes health and well-being in north Hull, but with a limited amount of funding available, it will be for the residents to decide just how the money will be divided up."

The event will take place on Saturday at the Endsleigh Centre on Beverley Road between 10am and 2pm.
