Nightwatch for stargazers

John Harper, from the Scarborough and Ryedale Astronomical Society, prepares the giant telescope at Dalby Observatory, Dalby Forest.

Bats, owls and twinkling stars are set to be the crowd-pullers as the Forestry Commission stages its annual Nightwatch. The nocturnal event next Saturday has become one of the most popular in the 8,600-acre

wood, near Pickering. Telescopes from Scarborough and Ryedale Astronomical Society will be trained skywards to reveal galaxies millions of light years away. For more information go to www.forestry.gov.uk/YorkshireandtheHumber or call 01751472771.
