Northern site for first bio refinery

Plans have been announced for Europe's first advanced bio refinery, converting municipal waste into bioethanol and electricity.

Ineos Bio said yesterday the plant would be based at its Seal Sands site, near Middlesbrough, producing around 30 million litres of ethanol from waste, providing the biofuel requirement of around 250,000 vehicles a year and the electricity needs of 6,000 households.

The company said it has received an offer of a 7.3m grant towards the 52m building costs.

Subject to final agreements, the plant is due to be completed by 2012.

Ineos Bio chief executive Peter Williams said waste could be recycled into clean biofuel for cars and electricity for homes.
