Novel venue for railway artist

The UK's only full-time professional artist based on a steam railway is staging his first exhibition in a Yorkshire library.

Christopher Ware, who has his studio at Levisham Station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, where is is artist-in-residence – ‘the only such professional in the country’, he says – was at Pickering Library with community officer Louise Northrop-Clay ready to hang one of the pictures, a watercolour called Helmsley Castle based on sketches by JMW Turner.

The exhibition will be in Pickering until Christmas, after which it will travel to other North Yorkshire libraries. Proceeds from sales of the works will help boost the funds of the county’s libraries, said Mr Ware. Picture: Gerard Binks.
