George Charlson

He lectured at York St John College, now York St John University, for 30 years until he retired in 1990, having for the last 10 years of his career been head of the physical education department.

He played many sports, but was a particularly keen golfer being a member of Fulford Golf Club, York, from 1968 until 2007 and also on the greens committee.

Mr Charlson was born in Chorley, Lancashire, and was the eldest of four children. He was educated at the local grammar school before doing his National Service with the RAF.

He then studied at Carnegie College, Leeds where he qualified as a PE teacher before taking 
his first appointment at Southlands Secondary School, Chorley.

From there, he moved to York from where he later took a sabbatical year and studied at the city’s university for an MA in child development.

Mr Charlson was known as a very caring man who loved working with students and enjoyed talking to people.

He was a guide at York Minister for 18 years, initially taking people round only in the 
college holidays, but after he retired he spent one day a week there.

He was also keen on bird watching and walking.

Mr Charlson is survived by Joan his wife of 56 years, his son Tim, and three grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held today at St Oswald’s Church, Fulford, York at 11.30am.
