Gordon Brown

GORDON Brown, one of York City's FA Cup heroes when they reached the semi-final in 1955, has died in Nottingham Hospital after having heart problems n recent years. He was 81.

Brown, who lived in Warsop, was initially an inside forward but switched to right half. He joined York from Nottingham Forest in June 1950 and scored on his debut – a 7-2 defeat in a Division Three North game at Tranmere.

He was a first team regular for eight years and made a total of 351 appearances, scoring 25 goals. Brown was in the legendary team which lost to Newcastle in the FA Cup semi-final replay at Roker Park in March 1955 after a goalless draw at Hillsborough.

He left York in 1958.
