Occupational health centre set to open

BUSINESSES in the region are being offered better access to occupational health with the opening of a new £1.6m centre in Bradford.

The Workplace Health and Wellbeing Centre at Bradford Royal Infirmary is among an 11-strong network in England, one of which is already open in York.

It will provide occupational health services including hearing assessments and sickness absence referrals to more than 10,000 employees from the NHS to a range of industries in West Yorkshire industries.

Its opening is part of a Government drive to tackle long-term sickness rates amid evidence that two-thirds of absences and long-term incapacity are due to mild or treatable conditions, mainly mental illness or muscle and joint problems.

The facilities include a gym, counselling suite, an audio booth for hearing tests, and 10 consulting rooms.

David Richardson, chairman of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: "By offering a one-stop shop support to smaller businesses and companies, we can ensure that local industry delivers an occupational health service to their staff which is second to none."
