Old parcels office set to be artists’ home

cash has been secured to begin repairing The Old Parcels Office at Scarborough Railway Station and turn it into artists’ studios.

Members of Scarborough Civic Society are on the board of directors for the project and extensive surveys have been carried out by Scarborough Studios Ltd, a not-for-profit company to enable the project to go ahead.

A number of agencies are contributing cash towards the transformation of the grade II listed building. Sufficient cash has been raised to repair the building but nore needs to be raised to complete the full conversion.

The civic society is also involved in another restoration project.

An animal drinking trough used by horses over a century ago, is in line for renovation in the seafront area of Sandside.

On it is the inscription: “As is good news from a far country, so is water to a thirsty soul. In memory of Godfrey Walker of Conisborough Priory, Yorkshire 1908. Drink thirsty soul and thank God.”

Scarborough Borough Council has now given the green light to carry out the work, said society secretary, Adrian Perry.

It is planned to make it a floral feature when the renovation is completed, he added.
