Oldest bus in young hands

One of Britain's youngest bus drivers has taken the wheel of the country's oldest working bus to offer visitors to Whitby a trip down memory lane.

Vernon Smith Jnr, 20, who only qualified as a bus driver a couple of weeks ago, has been trained on the seaside town's 1920s charabanc, Charlotte, which is the oldest bus in the country still in daily service.

He is running circular tours of the town. His parents Vernon and Viv Smith started their steam business with the charabanc in 2004 and their company Northern Star is now famous all over the world.

Their son has been involved in the family firm for three years.

The age limit for becoming a bus driver has only recently been lowered from 21.
