Olympic hopeful cyclist among five hurt in crash

YORKSHIRE'S Olympic hopeful Hannah Mayho is recovering from surgery on a broken leg after five members of the UK cycling team were involved in a road accident while out training.

The 19-year-old's left leg was pinned and she is expected to remain in hospital for a further week. She also has a broken arm and wrist.

She was hit by a car pulling out of a junction in Belgium.

The track and road cyclist, from Cullingworth, near Bradford, was hit by a car on Friday morning between the towns of Brakel and Oudenaarde in Belgium.

Mayho is hopeful of competing in the 2012 London Olympics.

British Cycling released a statement which said: "Her parents and coach Simon Cope, who are with her, have reported she is feeling positive."

Fellow team members Lucy Martin, Katie Colclough, Emma Trott and Sarah Reynolds were also involved in the collision. Martin, 20, from Cheshire, suffered a cracked vertebra and is being cared for by the team doctor, while Colclough, also 20, from Lincolnshire, suffered concussion.

Trott, 20, and 18-year-old Reynolds suffered a broken collarbone and cut chin, respectively, and have already been released from hospital.

Olympic champion Nicole Cooke has been racing with the Great Britain team but was not on Friday's training ride.

Mayho, Martin and Colclough are members of the Olympic academy programme.

Mayho took up cycling seriously while a pupil at North Halifax Grammar School. She had taken part in cross-country running and netball at county level while at school, but when an Olympic talent team visited her school they spotted her potential.

Since then she has won several titles, including junior European champion and British champion at Under 16s and junior level.
