Olympic Torch all set to blaze a trail in region

THE world’s gaze will be trained on the east coast of Yorkshire today as the Olympic flame makes its first foray into the region.

Crowds will line the county’s streets as the torch is carried from Hinderwell to Hull.

From Hinderwell, it will make its way via Lythe and Sandsend to Whitby, where it will board a North Yorkshire Moors Railway train to Pickering.

The railway has announced it will be running two engines during the torch’s journey: the A4 Pacific locomotive Sir Nigel Gresley – which is the fastest steam engine since the Second World War – and the locomotive Green Knight.

Former Olympic rower Rooney Massara, who now runs holiday cottages just outside Pickering, will join them on board the torchbearer train.

He said: “My father took me to the 1948 Olympics when I was five years old, I was lucky enough to be in the British team for the Munich Olympics in 1972 and so, as you can imagine, I am excited about London 2012 and having the torch relay on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.”

The train and Whitby station will not be open to the public and there will be limited access to the platform at Pickering station.

From Pickering, the relay will continue to Scarborough, Filey, Bridlington, Beverley and Hull.

In Hull, its final destination for the day, its arrival will be celebrated with a free, family-friendly party in West Park from 4.30pm to 8pm.

The Lord Mayor will give a speech ahead of a countdown to the torch’s arrival at 7.20pm, when a cauldron will be lit to celebrate its visit to the city.

Tomorrow, the torch makes its way from Hull to York. See tomorrow’s Yorkshire Post for full details.
