A wage claim from Leeds, that three women employed by S. Gibson and Sons Ltd. on glazing kid, should be paid the full men’s (skilled) rate, has been rejected by the National Arbitration Tribunal, it was announced last night.

The Tribunal say that, after careful consideration, they find that “having regard to all the circumstances in which their work is carried out, the three women cannot properly be regarded as engaged in an operation classified under the terms of the agreed schemes as a skilled man’s job, and are not therefore entitled to be paid the agreed rates for women employed on a skilled man’s job.”

The works concerned are the Hough End Tannery, Bramley.

No evidence, says the Tribunal, was adduced that the women concerned fulfilled a provision of the agreed schemes, demanding the skill to adjust and keep the machines in order.
