On this day in Yorkshire 1950

After 32 years in Toronto, 58 year old Mrs. Florence Bertram arrived back Leeds last night.

She will stay England for three months. Her son. 40-year-old Mr. Edward Gordon of Trafalgar Street. Bradford, who had not seen his mother since he was eight, was among the group of 10 relatives at City Station to welcome her, but he did not recognise his mother as she got off the train.

It was Mrs. Bertram’s two sisters, Mrs. C. Paley, Sandford Estate, Bramiey, and Mrs. A. Batty. Burley Wood Lane, Leeds, who found her.

Mrs. Bertram, who lived in Burley Lane, Leeds, went to Canada by herself after her husband’s death, to join another Leeds woman, Mrs. Simons, in Toronto.

“I have never regretted going,” she said last night. “Canada is a place you do not want to leave once you get there. Besides I now have a daughter and two grandchildren there.”

Not only was Mrs. Bertram delighted to see the English countryside again, but she had found to her surprise that this year England is warmer than Canada.

“Usually it is 120 degrees in the shade in Toronto by now, but so far it has not got hot and I find England very warm, especially London,” she exclaimed.
