Countryside Code and national awareness – The Yorkshire Post says

AN inevitable consequence of the lockdown has been increased use of footpaths and people venturing out into the countryside.

Though welcome, it has, regrettably, led to an increase in flytipping, littering, gates being left open and, worryingly, the harassment of livestock.

As such, the Country Land and Business Association is right to call for the Countryside Code to be taught in schools – it is perverse and paradoxical that rural issues continue to be sidelined on the curriculum when young people have never been more vocal about issues pertaining to the environment.

Yet, given the issue’s urgency, and the fact that many pupils won’t be in lessons until September, how about the Government making the Countryside Code the focus of its next nationwide advertising campaign and to remind the country at large that a little bit of common sense, and respect for farmers, can go a very long way?
