Freedom fighter

REGINALD Earnshaw was just 14-years-old when he lost his life serving his country in the Second World War.

The teenager, from Dewsbury, was so determined to join the war effort that he lied about his age to become a Merchant Navy cabin boy.

Known as Reggie, he was killed – after only a few months at sea – when the SS North Devon came under enemy fire. But only now has he been confirmed as Britain's youngest service casualty of the war.

This story came to light through the efforts of a friend who had served alongside Reggie and traced his body to an unmarked grave in Edinburgh. Today, on what would have been Reggie's 83rd birthday, a simple ceremony will honour his bravery.

As our Armed Forces continue to risk their lives in service of their country, it is fitting that Reggie's extraordinary story is heard by new generations to understand the sacrifice others have made in our name, and for our freedom.
