Hull Trains link to London must be reinstated – The Yorkshire Post says

IN an ideal world, The Yorkshire Post would be expecting Transport Minister Chris Heaton-Harris to catch a train to Hull to see why a direct rail link from the East Yorkshire city to London matters so much.

But Covid-19 means these are abnormal times and, in any case, the Government has yet to give permission for so-called ‘open access’ operators like Hull Trains to resume once again.

And this is what is so exasperating about the Minister’s inadequate response to Hull’s MPs, and others, who have been pressing for clarity on behalf of all those who depend on a rail service that was launched in 2000.

Yet, as services resume elsewhere, there is a nagging sense that the Government does not quite grasp the importance of Hull Trains to the area’s resurgence since the turn of the Millennium.

As Mr Heaton-Harris can’t travel to Hull, he should consent to a ‘Zoom’ meeting with MPs with the express intention to get services back on track as quickly as possible.

Update: A Department for Transport statement on June 10, 2020, said: “We recognise the decision Hull Trains has taken to temporarily suspend services due to falling passenger demand, as commuters follow government health advice and only take essential journeys.

“We are working closely with Hull Trains and its owning group to discuss the full range of regulatory and Government support available and are keen to see them return to the network as soon as conditions permit.”
