Its intention to keep open the grounds of historic properties, like Fountains Abbey, Beningbrough Hall and Nostell Priory, is a breath of fresh air at a time when ‘social distancing’ – which is very different to ‘self-isolation’ – is becoming the new norm.

For while it is only right that the charity’s buildings, cafes and shops remain shut, as per official advice, the decision to maintain free access to parks and gardens is sensible if everyone follows guidance on handwashing. And it sends out another message.

Not only will the fit, and healthy, want to maintain exercise for their own wellbeing, but it is a reminder that there will be a huge opportunity for UK tourism when Covid-19 does pass and the sector should be ready to take advantage.
