Never again

THE only consolation to the families of the 56 football fans killed in the Bradford City fire disaster, and all those who were left scarred for life, is that it can never happen again.

That tragedy, remembered so movingly on its 25th anniversary yesterday, finally brought about legislation to compel football clubs to pull down outdated stands.

The horrific scale of the disaster, and the pressure that this placed on local hospitals, has also seen Bradford become a world-leader in the treatment

of burns.

Yet this does not lessen the grief or pain for those whose loved ones never returned from a football match that was supposed to have been a celebration of Bradford City's promotion.

It also puts into perspective those who agree with the legendary manager Bill Shankly's assertion that "football is a matter of life and death, except more important". It is not.
