Proof of pudding

The rhubarb revolution has begun. The next battle could see an even greater triumph than that secured last month, when Yorkshire producers won protected name status for their variety of the purple sticks.

It would see Yorkshire pudding, one of the county's most famous foods, treated in the same way as Champagne and Parma ham. It would also mean that rivals from outside the county, who have grown rich on marketing the Sunday roast favourite, could cash in no more.

Anything that protects

this much-loved regional speciality is a good

thing. It is not a done deal, however, because nothing can be taken for granted when dealing with the topsy-turvy logic of Brussels.

So get behind the Yorkshire Pudding campaign – and don't forget about Wensleydale cheese, as it bids for the same status. Their unique flavours will taste even better knowing that imitators and impostors have been wiped off the map.
