Rishi Sunak shows calmness and competence as strikes are suspended - The Yorkshire Post says

Finally, it would seem, some headway is being made in the negotiations between trade unions and the Government.

There was a breakthrough in the NHS dispute on Thursday, with leaders of nurses, ambulance crews and other health workers agreeing to suspend further industrial action while ballots are held on a new pay offer.

Then the Government and education unions agreed to hold “intensive talks” on the issues which have sparked a series of strikes by teachers in recent months, including one in England earlier this week.

That is to be welcomed and it appears as though there is a way forward – and good news for patients, parents and pupils, too, despite solutions needing to be found in other sectors.

If a meaningful understanding is found, all concerned should be congratulated for negotiating in good faith and working hard to find an agreeable compromise – the key to any such talks.

In a wider sense, the Conservatives are displaying a couple of things that should worry anyone who is not in favour of them remaining in power: calmness and competence. The Windsor Framework, for example, looks like a remarkable piece of statecraft, and the military submarine deal between the UK, US and Australia can be seen a positive.

Time will tell if the electorate is willing to forgive the Tories for all that has come before.
