Royal approval

IN the 35 years since the Queen last visited Scarborough, the resort has seen its share of setbacks. In common with all other seaside towns, Scarborough has had to endure the growth of foreign holidays and the demise of the traditional family fortnight by the sea.

Unlike many of its counterparts, however, Scarborough has shown rare resilience in adjusting to this change. Never content to rest on its reputation, the town has effectively reinvented itself in recent years, its efforts being recognised last year when Scarborough was named Europe's most enterprising town for its people's own efforts in

developing new businesses and creating jobs.

Now, the restored Open-Air Theatre in Northstead Manor Gardens, which the Queen opened yesterday, will play its own part in the continuing story of Scarborough's renaissance – a story that now has Royal

approval.
