When his Saturday night programme was in its pomp, his guests knew that any invitation was recognition that they had made it in their chosen field. And while this access afforded Sir Michael the chance to meet many of his heroes, and who, in turn, became friends, there was one person missing – his father John William and Sir Michael speaks tenderly about him this weekend.

Described as a “Yorkshireman, miner, humorist and fast bowler’, traits that still run deep in the family, Sir Michael, ably assisted by his son, has now written a family memoir which is as compelling, and, in places, as tear-jerking as so many of Sir Michael’s interviews.
