From the country becoming a nation of walkers during the first lockdown to growing interest in marine life thanks to the TV presenter Sir David Attenborough, there is hope for the future.

This is borne out by the annual review of the UK coast by local widlife trusts – notable sightings highlighted by today’s report are the 30 bottlenose dolphins seen in playful displays off the coast of Teesside and a humpback whale captured on film four miles off Flamborough Head.

Natural wonders of the world, the sadness is that the health of these great sea creatures continues to be put at risk by plastic pollution, including discarded PPE, hence one final request of the year to readers – please discard litter more responsibly in future. Thank you.
