Sports Personality of the Year should go to Kevin Sinfield, Rob Burrow and Marcus Rashford – The Yorkshire Post says

THERE’S still a generation of people who regard BBC Sports Personality of the year – or Spoty for short – as both the ultimate award and unofficial start of Christmas.

Yet, while Sunday’s show will go ahead without a studio audience, this newspaper, for one, is disappointed that it will be a special edition devoted to those whose deeds have made such a difference to society in the year of Covid.

It is regrettable that the shortlist excludes the footballer Marcus Rashford whose work on child food poverty has humbled many and shamed politicians. A token award appears demeaning.

Equally the BBC can expect the red card if it does not honour the stoicism of Rob Burrow, the Leeds Rhinos legend battling MND, and his former skipper Kevin Sinfield who has just raised over £2m by running seven marathons in as many days to fund research into this debilitating disease.
