Surfing paradise

FOR many years, Scarborough has been defying the perceived wisdom that traditional British seaside resorts are in an irreversible decline.

The North Yorkshire town has been transformed into the most

enterprising place in Europe, with one of the fastest broadband connections in the country and the UK's first wireless broadband harbour front.

Now it seems the town's revival is also stretching out to sea with a new generation of surfers flocking to Scarborough from around the country.

These latest visitors are not carefree teenagers in search of an adrenaline rush but a new wave of 30, 40 and 50- somethings who are turning to the pastime as a weekend pursuit.

Surf schools report being inundated with bank workers, doctors, teachers and accountants who come to Scarborough wanting to surf the waves as well as the web.

This trend is providing a welcome boost to the town's economy and shows that coastal towns, far from being confined to the 20th century, remain a huge asset to our region and its economic future.
