A timely tribute to clockmaker John Harrison – The Yorkshire Post says

The 18th century carpenter and self-taught clockmaker who revolutionised navigation by inventing a device that could calculate longitude at sea, has long been a revered name in the scientific community.

But in Barrow-upon-Humber, where he spent most of his life, little trace remains. The statue of him shortly to be unveiled in the Market Place will remedy that. Fittingly, it looks out towards the water.

It is to the credit of the local community that this has happened. Some £70,000 has been raised over a couple of years and a renowned sculptor commissioned to design the statue and cast it in bronze.

Harrison has remained an inspiration to generations of scientists, and his immortalisation across the road from his workshop will become, we hope, not just a timely link to the past but also a valuable community asset for the future.
