Winter warmer

WHAT a fantastic effort by Yorkshire Post readers, local businesses, philanthropists and others who have helped this newspaper's Communities in Need appeal fund reach the £100,000 landmark.

After one of the coldest weeks Yorkshire folk have experienced in many a year, this is some truly warming news as the ice finally begins to thaw.

In times of such economic hardship for many, it is testament to the generosity shown by so many that a six-figure sum has been raised in aid of local community projects.

From the 32,000 donated today by Action Halifax to the 10 pledge received from a Yorkshire pensioner via our donations website, every last penny will make a real difference to those individuals and communities across the region who are suffering severe deprivation.

So let us now press on towards an even larger total in the final weeks before Christmas. For, as the full force of the Government's spending cuts begins to be felt in the New Year, it will be the community-based, grassroots schemes supported by your donations which will offer a crucial lifeline to those most in need.
