AS THE political and economic momentum behind Northern Powerhouse Rail continues to gather pace, it is reassuring that Tim Wood, the official at the controls of this particular train, is already planning ahead to ensure that sufficient engineers are being trained.
For, while this region does still have to win over the Government, this focus on skills strengthens still further the arguments being put forward by political and business leaders as they press for improved links across the North to take precedence over Crossrail 2 in London.
Overlooked by successive governments, the last thing that Yorkshire passengers want is this long-overdue – and critically important – scheme being put at risk because of a very avoidable shortage of specialist staff.
