YP Comment: The new home of triathlon - Leeds event is a huge success

IT was perhaps fitting, given he was competing in his own back yard, that Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee should triumph in the inaugural Columbia Threadneedle World Triathlon Leeds yesterday.

But while he edged out his brother Jonny, perhaps the biggest winner was Leeds itself. This was the first time that the British leg of the ITU World Triathlon Series had been held outside London, and with live television coverage of the race beamed out in more than 20 countries it brought international attention to the city, highlighting what an exciting and vibrant place it is.

Tens of thousands of spectators lined the route cheering on the world’s top triathletes, with yesterday’s race capping a brilliant weekend of triathlons that included events for novices and youngsters. Those from the triathlon fraternity spoke of the great sense of pride and camaraderie in the city – proof, should any be needed, that Leeds is more than capable of hosting world-class sporting events.

One of the reasons why the city was able to host such a prestigious occasion is down to the incomparable Brownlee brothers, who have not only helped put their sport firmly on the map, but their home city, too. Praise must also go to Leeds City Council for having the vision and determination to convince the race organisers that Leeds could put on just as good a show as London, or anywhere else for that matter.

If Yorkshire has established itself as the home of cycling in this country, then Leeds can be rightly viewed as the home of triathlon. Just as the London Marathon has become a fixture on the sporting calendar, one that is watched by millions of people around the world, so there is no reason why Leeds cannot establish itself as the home of triathlon for many years to come. Everything must now be done to ensure it is here to stay.
