THANKFULLY the ‘Good Samaritan’ ethos prevails.

Recently I went to Wetherby as usual to do my weekly shop.

Being careful to maintain social distancing, I managed to trip over a curb and hit my face on the ground damaging my glasses and causing my nose to bleed, together with a scratch on the bridge of my nose which was bleeding profusely.

Those shoppers in the queue at Marks & Spencer food store quickly came to my aid, lifting me up and seating me on a nearby bench.

As the bench was a wet one, one shopper insisted that I should sit on his shopping bag to keep dry.

They then alerted the staff at Marks & Spencer and their first aider set about stemming the flow of blood from my nose.

She also called for an ambulance so that I could be checked over.

I was pronounced fit to complete my shopping and to drive home by car as I had a set of prescription sunglasses which meant that I had good visibility.

There was an added complication as I had brought a neighbour with me and she was shopping in Morrisons.

On hearing this, one of the staff from Marks & Spencer immediately went to Morrisons, and within a very short space of time, returned with my neighbour.

I then completed my shopping and was able to drive home safely.

The following day I was amazed to receive a telephone call from the first aider checking that I was okay.

I have no lasting problems as a result of the fall, but it would have been much worse without the first-class care and attention I received at the time.

From: Lesley Skorupka, Rookery Dale, Boosbeck.

HOW many times has there been a knock on your door these last few weeks and you are faced by a wet, cold person handing you a package that won’t go through the letterbox?

How many people take them for granted?

How many people offer them a take away hot drink?

Our regular friendly Scottish postie now feels he can ask me for a hot coffee when he wants one.

Our grocery delivery man said it’s the first time he’s been offered a hot drink, off he went happily clutching a coffee.

We take them so much for granted, and I know through these times we have to be careful, but a bit of kindness towards our deliverers is the least we can do.
