Army had right
idea on crime

From: David H Rhodes, Keble Park North, Bishopthorpe, York.

IN conversation with a retired military man we discussed what should be the penalty for any particular crime. He cited the case of an army sergeant with 19 years’ service who was court martialled for misappropriation of approximately £6.

The sergeant was dismissed with loss of pension rights. How does this severity match up with misdemeanours by the general public? How about a proposal that a crime that warrants a prison sentence should then have an additional financial penalty, say 10 per cent of the offender’s capital?

CAN you ever wonder why people get into debt and young people often drive through towns and villages like idiots? Every time you switch the TV on there is someone advertising loans. What they don’t say is how much interest you will pay.

Jeremy Clarkson fronts a programme that literally invites people to drive foolishly and young men trying to be macho will copy him. Many young men don’t have legal access to a car so they steal one in order to emulate Clarkson and co.

More waste

From: Phil Hanson, Baildon, Shipley.

FORMER sports minister Richard Caborn is wrong to call for a new facility to be built in Sheffield to replace the Don Valley Stadium. The fact of the matter is the republic of South Yorkshire needs to stop running up debts and live within its means. The money Caborn would waste could make a real positive difference in Bradford, a city long ignored by all political parties!
