Aspirations for the archbishop

I THINK that Dr John Sentamu is proving himself to be an excellent Archbishop of York.

For not only is he a firm believer in the Church’s traditional values, rather than be someone who allows himself to be led by morals of the day, he also shows the common touch perhaps lacking in some of the more academically-minded members of the cloth.

In addition, Dr Sentamu is prepared to challenge the old-fashioned view of what a woman’s place in the Church should be, knowing that Christ himself gave important roles to the females he met throughout his ministry.

So I hope fears that racism might prevail prove to be futile, and that Dr Sentamu duly becomes the next Archbishop of Canterbury.

Faithful lessons

WITH reference to the letter from John Gordon (Yorkshire Post, May 22) on the subject of science as religion, I was head of religious education at Ripon Grammar School.

I can assure him that during my time, RE was certainly not “a sort of pub quiz”. Indeed, two of my former pupils are both doctors of theology and currently lecturing in the subject at Cambridge University. I am equally certain that my successor, a Methodist minister, continued the above tradition and indeed those that followed him.

I AGREE with RM Whitaker (Yorkshire Post, May 29) and I would go a little further and add disabled drivers to the question of fairness. Disabled drivers who give up the mobility portion of Disability Living Allowance in exchange for a car under the Motability scheme then have to use part of the care allowance portion of DLA to fuel that car and pay full VAT if it is fuelled by diesel or petrol.
