August 12: Unfair to rely on landlords to tackle illegal migrant issue

From: Dick Lindley, Altofts.

I NEARLY choked on my cornflakes when I heard on the radio the latest pathetic attempts by our Government to prevent Britain being overrun by illegal immigrants.

I was particularly incensed to hear that private landlords are now to fined or imprisoned if any of their tenants turn out to be illegal immigrants.

How does any landlord know if the people applying to rent his property are legally entitled to be in our country? He has no legal right to check their passports and to try and determine their ethnicity would almost certainly be an offence under race relations legislation.

The truth of the matter is that governments, both present and past, have knowingly allowed these people into our country and they are the ones who ought to be charged with a dereliction of duty for failing to properly police our borders.

Our situation appears to be made much worse by the French, who are failing to prevent illegal immigrants breaking in to British lorries whilst they are on French soil and in addition they are either unable or unwilling to stop them entering the gateway to the UK, that is the Channel tunnel.

I wonder how many more months of this shocking debacle will we have to endure before somebody in power sorts it out once and for all. It would be a useful start to correcting the situation if we were to leave that corrupt regime which we call the EU and regain control of the UK borders, without any interference from Brussels or Frau Merkel, both of whom have recently stated that the principle of the free movement of peoples within the EU is not negotiable.

LISTENING to a politician being interviewed about the restrictions on illegal immigrants and rented accommodation clearly demonstrated our politicians’ inability to control immigration. When the interviewer asked if the police would be used to arrest and deport those removed from the property, no answer was forthcoming.

If illegal immigrants cannot be arrested, where will they go? How long will it take to remove them from this country if they are then able to appeal over time using our free legal aid system?

It is becoming increasingly clear why this country is number one destination for illegal immigration. The rapid removal of illegal immigrants and swift return to their own country would surely go a long way towards sending a clear message to those trying to enter this country unlawfully.
