Bercow helping the Commons

From: J W Buckley, Aketon, Pontefract.

THE Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, is portrayed as a fool. He is doing more to preserve the standing of the House of Commons than anyone else. He hauls arrogant Ministers before MPs to explain themselves, when they have by-passed the Commons. Our useless MPs should be applauding him and calling for “more” instead of their whispering campaign against him.

Weighty issue

From: Trev Bromby, Sculcoates Lane, Hull.

WHILE channel hopping, I hit the TV programme Doctors on BBC1 just as a seminar on obesity was commencing. “Sorry I’m late,” said the 20-stone lecturer on arrival. Rarely in the history of television could a more inapt and inept piece of casting have been made. I am dreading the remake of Dangerman starring Joe Pasquale if the Doctors casting agent is on board.

Joyful thanks

AMID most of today’s doom and gloom (apart from the two recent marvellous London Olympics), I would like to offer my thanks and praise to the Dales Unit at the often maligned Scarborough Hospital.

In particular, Mr Peter Bacon and his team, who perform miracles each day. The improvement in my eyesight after two operations is unbelievable. At the age of 91, I look forward to any future left to me with joyful anticipation.
