Bonfire beaches despoil resort

HAVING returned from a break in Scarborough over the Bonfire weekend, I feel it’s necessary to express my disgust at the lack of respect and poor behaviour by local people who used parts of both the North and South Bay beaches as nothing more than a dumping ground.

I was astonished to see a number of bonfires being constructed during the afternoon and, as evening fell, it became apparent that youths would use this once great night as an excuse to misbehave and drink alcohol.

It astounds me how people can be left to their own devices to set off fireworks in a public place without any supervision or control from Scarborough Council or the police.

ON a school visit (I was a teacher) to the Yorkshire coast a few years ago, I had stopped the coach in Valley Road, Scarborough, to look at what remains of the glacial overflow channel from the former Lake Pickering under the Valley Bridge and into the North Sea.

Imagine our surprise when the children spotted Jimmy Savile running up the hill on his daily outing, and their great thrill when he climbed on board and had a word with us all. That was typical of the man of the people and for the people. His true greatness will be sorely missed.

A better deal

SPENDING on education will fall by more than 13 per cent over the next four years. The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) says it will be the biggest cut for more than half a century. World youth is mobilising a desire for change based on honest fairness – and they will have to be listened to. We have three children, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. They will not give up their future. I would like to see a crisis election with a legal duty to vote and a National Government to set the course.
