Britain – an imperialist nation that looks to the world

From: John Gordon, Whitcliffe Lane, Ripon.

WE have never been Europeans, we are imperialists and our centre of gravity is the world.

This is at the heart of Conservative policy and is obviously something that Mr Cameron feels instinctively.

The 22 miles of English Channel is our protection from a different way of life and every war that we have ever fought on the Continent has been to keep us inviolate.

I do not say that 1066 was not an incursion on Anglo- Saxon tradition but it withstood the growth of the English language and made us recognise the danger from our neighbours.

Do we really want to take orders from a German hausfrau after having fought so courageously against that particular nation’s empire-building?

HURRAH for strong leadership at last. It has been intolerable to see President Sarkozy insulting our Prime Minister and country and behaving like a spoilt schoolboy by refusing to look at him or shake his hand. How utterly childish.

He and Angela Merkel have become far too powerful, and as for Merkel uttering a dark threat that the eurozone is preventing a war, this was an extremely chilling remark.

It is about time we stopped financing this failure that is Europe and has only brought ridiculous rules and regulations from Brussels that is strangling our country.

I applaud Mr Cameron on his strong stance but he will have his critics and will be damned if he does not do anything and damned if he does, but that is the nature of the job.

From: Robert Craig, Priory Road, Weston-super-Mare.

THERE is fresh evidence of the damage being done by the Liberal Conservative coalition’s “slash and burn” policies. An independent report by Standard Charter Bank says that the country is going into recession with the economy expected to shrink next year.

Mr Cameron’s “poodle-dog” act in Brussels has saved his skin and pleased the electorate and the newspapers. He will soon be found out.

The Conservatives’ best bet would be to go for a snap election, but Mr Cameron will not hold one, because he knows that a Conservative landslide would bring more traditional Conservative Eurosceptics into parliament. And the posturing Nick Clegg will not pull out of the coalition because he knows that the Liberal Democrats would be wiped out in a General Election.

If it wasn’t so serious, it would be quite amusing to see Mr Cameron and Mr Clegg getting themselves into such a mess over the EU as they attempt desperately to avoid the referendum Mr Cameron’s backbenchers are trying to hold him to.

From: Sheila Wolstenholme, Hampsthwaite.

I APPLAUD David Cameron’s wonderful stance at the recent summit with 27 other representatives. He has guts, just what is needed to show the world that Britain is not a pushover for the Germans or the weedy French.

Well done David Cameron, we may get out of the EU without a shot being fired.

From: Roger M Dobson, Ash Street, Cross Hills.

HOW good it was to see the Prime Minister has at last grown up to his responsibilities with regard to the European Union.

However, it is obvious that there is now only one route for David Cameron and that is to call a referendum as to whether we stay in Europe or not.

I THINK the quote of the week has got to be, made by one of the country’s leading economists, referring to this matter: “Britain is being left behind by a rickety cart drawn by a pantomime horse called Merkozy.”

Has not history taught us enough, about the dangers of Franco-Germanic Alliance?

Enough said.
