Case for severing UK links has not been made

From: Don Burslam, Elm Road, Dewsbury Moor, Dewsbury.

I HAVE enjoyed several happy holidays in Scotland and have great affection for the people. I think it’s a great pity therefore that the SNP have started to threaten us and have taken every opportunity to set us at odds with them.

The case for severing such a long-established link has not been made.

Apparently the Scots would retain the monarchy, keep the pound and stay in the EU so what’s the point of ‘independence’ even if the other interested parties would co-operate, which they are unlikely to do.

The idea that an independent Scotland could still rely on us or the banks in an emergency seems a dangerous piece of wishful thinking.

It is true that separation would weaken us but it would weaken Scotland more. They benefit from the Barnett Formula as well as the defence umbrellas and to pay for this themselves would be a colossal burden. Free care for the elderly and free tuition fees might well be in jeopardy. As for ‘Scotland’s oil’ that is a diminishing asset, particularly with the cost of extraction and the always volatile market.

Fortunately the polls are running decisively against the split although the media are trying to make it a ‘horse race’ by repeating that the gap is narrowing.

What if the SNP lose? Will we have to put up with the running sore of separatism because the “yes” people refuse to accept defeat?

From: RP Brocklebank, Glen Crescent, Melbourne, York.

GODFREY Bloom MEP
claims Scotland could easily adopt the pound sterling if it so wishes and it has nothing to do with David Cameron or George Osborne.

On the other hand, Cameron and Osborne say they
can’t because they won’t let them.

They can’t both be right.

Is anyone willing to let me know who is and who isn’t telling porkies?
