Closing Whitby’s swing bridge to traffic puts tourists before residents: Yorkshire Post Letters

Why is the plan to shut Whitby’s swing bridge pushed through with such haste in the middle of a pandemic?

Don’t tell me that the money for it has a time limit? In these exceptional times there should be leeway on the date such grants are used by. It seems that the group has one definite aim, and that is to promote an even bigger influx of tourists and make Whitby town centre a pedestrian area for their benefit.

This is over and above the daily life and travel needs of residents who pay a lot more than the value of a fish and chip takeaway for the now questionable pleasure of living in the town. We are not allowed public meetings where it can be discussed openly and we can complete survey forms.

This must be the biggest project dreamed up for the town since the New Bridge was in the planning stage, but without the consultation.

Every household, occupied by at least one resident, must be sent the same information as is being sent to 800 properties in the immediate area of the planned closures.

Most of these 800 will be businesses who want the tourist trade, including owners of holiday accommodation, and have a vested interest in agreeing with the plans.
