Coastal defences more vital than Scottish vote

From: Stephen Gash, St Augusta View, Carlisle.

WHEN will Yorkshire’s MPs demand decent coastal defences?

Too much is being made of the SNP’s victory in Holyrood. Scotland’s pretendy-independent party got a thrashing in the 2005 and 2010 General Elections, winning only six seats in each, especially significant for 2010 because it followed four years with Alex Salmond as First Minister.

The SNP has no mandate for an independence referendum, it only has a mandate to filch even more of England’s money so every MP in England should demand Scotland has its referendum this year.

For the SNP to destabilise things for at least four years during this economic crisis is intolerable. We need to get the economy back on track for 62 million people, not pander to the whim of five million Scots.

Any pandering should be to the 68 per cent of people in England wanting an English parliament, but are denied a referendum for absolutely no good reason. We can have it this year while the Scots are voting “no” in their independence referendum.

With an English parliament focusing on England’s needs, England can come top of the spending ladder instead of bottom for a change.

We can start by having 21st century coastal defences along England’s east coast, especially Yorkshire.

Floods like those in 1953 will devastate 16.5 million people, more than the combined population of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
