Costly meddling in foreign lands

From: Peter Hyde, Driffield, East Yorkshire.

WHY is George Osborne “ring fencing” foreign aid (Yorkshire Post, May 29)? We are already spending millions on a foreign war in Afghanistan and it looks as though we shall be spending even more millions funding the insurgents in Syria.

As a Tory voter for the last 60 years I feel no longer able to support them in their present form and shall either vote Ukip or abstain at the next election.

THE Yorkshire MP for Brigg and Goole, Andrew Percy, accuses people who use Amazon of being “hypocrites” during a Parliamentary debate on the future of the traditional high street (Yorkshire Post, May 27).

I have news for Mr Percy, the traditional high street was decimated years ago by the likes of Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and all the other supermarkets. I did not see any MPs or city and town councillors rush to help the small shopkeeper then!

Land grab

From: P Dransfield, Main Street, Great Heck, Goole.

THE recent reference to Clement Attlee and nationalisation in a letter was a bit mixed up. The railways, hospitals etc. were nationalised to get their hands on the large estates owned by these companies. Governments have made billions selling off land and property and are still doing it.

Riding high

I FEAR we are back to the British pastime of lifting someone on to a pedestal, only to see how quickly we can knock them down (Tom Richmond, Yorkshire Post, June 1). Yes, perhaps Clare Balding is suffering from a little over-exposure, but let her enjoy the moment!
