Disbelief at railway’s contempt of disabled woman

From: Mike Appleyard, Hill Rise, Market Weighton.

Having read, with disbelief and not a little anger, the letter from Richard Allan, assistant area director for Northern Rail (Yorkshire Post, February 19), it seems to me he is not “of this world”, sitting in his cosy well-paid cocoon, lecturing to the disabled on the “reasonable alternatives to Disabled Discrimination Act standards” provided by Northern Rail.

I am of the opinion that he is talking out of the top of his head.

Firstly, his statement that “Ms Redmile would be provided with a taxi from Goole station, her nearest station and eight minutes away, which would take her back to Thorne North or to her home whichever is her preference”.

This would add a further half hour to her day, not counting the stress and total inconvenience, all for what?, because the number crunchers, have decided that Thorne North, does not merit a staff presence. Mr Allan should be attempting to persuade members of the public “to let the train take the strain”, and not offering a taxi service, as a viable alternative, for the disabled.

Come off it Northern Rail, look at the real world and provide a service, as in the days of British Rail.
